Botulinum toxin, also known as a neurotoxin injection, is a purified protein and a medical prescription product that has been proven to be safe.
It paralyses the communication between the nerves in the muscle and the brain. Just like any muscle in the body, if it is not used on a daily basis, it will weaken and atrophy. This will affect only the muscle where the injectable neurotoxin was administered and not your whole face. Your lines will soften and eventually disappear.
A botulinum injection is quick and simple. It has been described as feeling like a mosquito bite, and you will leave with what will look like little red bee stings that will settle down quickly. No anaesthetic is required for the treatment.
It is used most commonly to treat unwanted wrinkles caused by repetitive movement, including frown lines, forehead lines, bunny lines, and crow’s feet.
An experienced injector will know how many botulinum toxin units to inject so that you will look natural and not “frozen.” The desired result is for cosmetic injections to leave you looking refreshed and natural.
If you decide to stop having facial injectables, your muscles will lose the muscle-relaxing effect and simply return to their previous state. Once the muscles are fully active, wrinkles and lines will gradually reappear.
Most common areas where botulinum therapy is administered include:
- Frown lines
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet
- Lifted eyebrows
Less commonly, but very successfully, botulinum toxin therapy is used for:
- Excessive sweating
- Teeth clenching
